Tony Roberts, actor best known for Woody Allen -Roller, dead of 85

Tony-nominated actor appeared in six allen movies including Annie Hall. Hannah and her sistersand Radio days

Tony Roberts, the scene and screen the actor best known for his supporting roles in six Woody Allen films, has died at the age of 85.

Roberts’ daughter confirmed the actor’s death to New York Timesadded that he died in his home Friday in New York from complications from lung cancer.

The New York-born son of the famous radio reviewer Ken Roberts, Tony starred in the Broadway production of Barefoot in the rain (taking over to the acting original actor, Robert Redford), before performing in Allen’s Broadway shows Don’t drink the water and Play it again, SamWith Roberts, who shares the stage with Allen in the latter. Roberts was nominated for a best actor Tony Award for his role in playing it again, Sam, as he and Allen repeated in 1972 film adaptation directed by Herbert Ross.

Five years later Allen would throw Roberts as his Hollywood manuscript writer in 1977’s Annie HallOne of six times he would appear in a Allen-Penn movie; Roberts also starred in Allen’s Stardust Memories1982’s A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy1986’s Hannah and her sistersand 1987’s Radio days.

Roberts’ Screens Roller also included Serpico. Roofing by Pelham One to Three. Amityville 3-D2017 -Gen recording of Dirty Dancingand more appearances across Law & Order franchises. On Broadway, Roberts’ credits included How now, Dow Jones. Sugaran adaptation of the film Some like it hot. Victor/Victoria beside Julie Andrews and a revival of Xanadu.

“I was lucky enough to get into the last years of the Golden Age of Broadway,” Roberts Told Broadway World in 2015. “In that era, there was much more that seemed to have high quality about it and great conviction.”
