Winter Storm predicted to bring more snow in New York, Boston and Northeast

A winter storm that has worked throughout the country is expected to bring a strong dose of winter weather to the northeastern United States on Saturday, with snow collections as high as seven inches expected over Boston and other cities.

In New York, snow is expected to start falling late Saturday afternoon before switching to a mixture of rain, snow and gossip at night. Three to five inches of snow and gossip are possible of Sunday with even more in some parts of the metro area, according to the National Weather Service.

Areas around Boston, where up to an empty snow can fall on Saturday night, is expected to see snow total between five and 11 inches before the storm moves out of the East Coast on Sunday.

In northeastern, winter weather advice and winter storm warnings were in effect until Sunday over New York, New Jersey and New England. Winter Storm warnings on Saturday also stretched from Wisconsin through Minnesota and into Dakotas.

This is the second winter storm in a week to cross the country, creating a dividing line of warmer rain in the south and colder snowy weather to the north – and a messy winter mix in between.

Philadelphia, at the southern edge of this storm, will probably see a mixture of snow, gossip and freezing rain as early as noon on Saturday, and icy roads will make drifting treacherous, Forecasts warned.

Early Saturday, the storm brought heavy snow to Dakotas, and by the afternoon the snow fell over the big lakes. Small shifts could significantly affect where the heaviest snow falls.

Areas that are expected to see the most snow include Upstate New York and New England.

“Some of the heavier totals expected are around the Albany area in New York and across southern Vermont and New Hampshire and into a good part of Massachusetts, including Boston,” said Bob Oravec, a meteorologist at National Weather Service .

Areas further south, including Philadelphia and Washington, DC, are likely to encounter sleet and freeze rain.

“This storm is moving fairly quickly, and conditions will definitely be improved by Sunday afternoon,” said Mr. Oravec.

At Sunday night, Eagles football fans will be adorned with a clear sky as the sun goes down, leaving Philadelphia without new rainfall, but freezes temperatures to either celebrate or mourn the Super Bowl result.
