It’s time for basketball: Spurs by magic

If anyone thought Spurs would suddenly become World Beaters after the mid -season deal that landed De’Aaron Fox, the last two matches have probably been a little disappointing. Fox has been a revelation, but the old habits of poor defensive rotations, slow starter and lack of urgent character are still a big part of how this year’s spurs play basketball. Now that there are no big men available to play when Wembanyama sits, Spurs is forced to play Jeremy Sochan out of position where he struggles to rebound and score against higher players. The spur may pick up another big out of exceptions, but so far the schedule is unbalanced and wing and guard heavy. Fox has been really good in the clutch, but unanswered rotations have been expensive, especially on Hornet’s winning shot last night when Castle fell off her husband to triple team Lamelo ball in the paint after playing an almost perfect game for the first 47 minutes and 53 seconds.

It’s the second night on a back-to-back, and with Wemby, still playing with less energy than usual, it can be a hard night for silver and black against the big and physical magic lineup. The magic has played poorly recently, but teams always play their best at home against Victor Wembanyama and Spurs. They will have to have a better effort tonight than they did against Hornets to win, and it starts by avoiding the terrible starts that have become a spur brand this year.
