Preview of Games: San Antonio Spurs at Washington Wizards

There are only two more games before San Antonio Spurs get a much needed break to NBA All-Star Weekend. After two equal losses to fighting eastern conference ridges in Charlotte and Orlando, the spurs are on their way to the country’s capital for a match with Washington Wizards. The wizards have the worst record in the NBA and are without their two business deadlines, Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart.

This does not mean that the spurs can take them easily. San Antonio has been pushed around their last two matches. Rodeo Road Trip has not been friendly to them so far. They have fallen to 13. At the western conference position and look like they are limping to the All-Star break. A win in Washington DC would be a great way to get back on the field and instill some confidence that the team will move on.

What to look at:

Wembanyama’s condition

Victor Wembanyama has not looked like himself recently. A disease of some kind has knocked him out of the rhythm that made him an all-star. There is no better opportunity to get on track than against an under -dimensioned Wizard team. He was to dominate in the paint against Washington, where Alex Sarr is missing the game due to injury. Another game of Wembanyama that flows in and out of the game is making this recent stretch limit. He could have a big game inbound.

Bismack Biyombo’s debut

San Antonio signed the veteran big man, Bismack Biyombo, for a 10-day contract this weekend. His first chance to fit in silver and black comes Monday night. The spurs desperately need a backup center. Biyombo hasn’t played in a game since last season, but the veteran had to give them a little needed size and rebounding from the bench. It will be interesting to see how much Run Mitch Johnson gives Biyombo in his first competition.

Defends the perimeter

Spurs’ circumference defense has been porous in the last few competitions. They made some of the worst shooting teams in the NBA look good. The wizards are 29. In the NBA in three -point percentage, but have players who can get hot, like Jordan Poole. It doesn’t matter who the spurs play if they give up straight line drives and open triangles, other teams will hit shots. The defense must step up to snap the losing row.
