The Louisville area is now under a winter storm warning through Wednesday morning due to the potential of heavy snowfall up to 4 inches in some areas as a new storm system sweeps through the region.

Much of Louisville could receive 2-4 inches of snow on Monday night through Tuesday afternoon, said John Gordon, meteorologist-in-Charge for NWS Louisville during a conference call on Monday afternoon. The heaviest snowfall is expected to arrive between 7 p.m. 7 and 13

The Winter Storm Warning Area also includes Elizabetown, Frankfort and Lexington. The Lexington area could see some of the highest snow -taps in the state Tuesday, possibly up to 6 inches or more.

“Someone gets 3-6 inches of snow,” Gordon said. “It will happen. The exact location is very problematic.”

A flooding watch is also in effect for southern Kentucky through Tuesday night. Southern Kentucky is likely to see heavy rain rather than snow on Tuesday, which can cause less to moderate flood, according to National Weather Service. With additional rain showers expected throughout the Commonwealth on Wednesday and over the weekend, the Ohio River and other waterways could experience minor flood problems, officials said.
