Canned Tuna Recall: Trader Joe’s, HEB, Walmart, Publix Products Affected

If you have recently bought canned tuna at Trader Joe’s, HEB, Costco or Walmart, you might throw it out.

This is because a manufacturer of canned tuna products recently issued a nationwide recall of its products over a design problem that could potentially cause botulism.

Tri-Union Seafoods began the recall on February 7, according to a Food and Medicines Administration (FDA) press release. The recall affects canned tuna products sold under Genoa, Van Camp’s, Heb and Trader Joe’s brand names.

The brands of the recalled products as well as the states and stores they were sold are listed below:

  • HEB -ethe – Texas
  • Trader Joe’s Label – Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC and Wisconsin,
  • Genoa 7 oz. – Costco in Florida and Georgia

  • Van Camp’s Label – Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida and New Jersey

The manufacturer said the recall was “out of an abundance of caution” after it was warned of a deficiency in its cans.

“This volunteer recall is out of an abundance of caution after the message from our supplier that the ‘Light Open’ tab can lid on limited products, the delicious, or worse, be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning,” detailed the press release.

“Consumers are warned not to use the product, even if it doesn’t look or smells spoiled.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), botulism can result in respiratory distress, muscle paralysis and – in the most serious cases – death.

“When people eat these foods (contaminated with Clostridium Botulinum)They can become seriously ill or even die if they do not get proper medical treatment quickly, “notes the CDC’s website.

Tri-Union Seafoods advised consumers to seek medical attention immediately if they feel unwell after eating one of the affected products self-reported no such case so far.
