Several rounds of rainfall from Tuesday, February 11 to Thursday 13 February are expected to sweep through western North Carolina, bringing potential floods and other dangers to the area.

National Weather Service released a dangerous weather forecast at. 05.25 on February 10, warning of several days of storms moving through WNC, northeastern Georgia and western Upstate South Carolina.

NWS meteorologist Clay Chaney told the Citizen Times that some areas could see up to 8 inches of rainfall. Here’s what else we know.

How much rain does Asheville get? Western NC?

Chaney explained that many regions in WNC will get several centimeters of rain – but exact amounts depend on the area. With several expected rainfall rounds, Chaney added that it is more difficult to make accurate predictions about rainfall.

Somewhere between 3-5 inches of rain is the current prediction of the French Broad Valley including Asheville and eastern areas of the region and between 5-8 inches in western areas of the region such as Haywood County and Brevard.

More rain is an option for Saturday, but predictions are still uncertain from Monday.

Will it flood in Asheville, Western NC?

In the weather forecasts, NWS warned of several periods of rainfall. The first will be heavy rain on Tuesday night, with isolated genes flooded, especially over the southeastern NC mountains, northeastern Georgia and western Upstate South Carolina.

Another round of heavy rain is possible Wednesday night to Thursday morning, as a slowly moving cold front enters the area – further rainfall on top of wet soil can result in flooding in some areas.

“The first or two rounds probably do not cause problems, but they are just kind of prime the earth when we get later rounds, causing more runoff and faster answers to streams and rivers,” Chaney said.

Wind, winter weather risks

One piece of good news about the upcoming storms is that wind is not expected to be a problem.

“We don’t expect strong wind, not even on back tops,” Chaney said.

Although the wind is not expected to be a problem, however, concern lies in more than just the heavy rain, especially on Tuesday, February 11.

“The eastern slopes from around Boone and Avery County and then down towards Mount Mitchell and maybe even in parts of Buncombe County, like near Black Mountain, could see some freezing rain, especially tomorrow, tomorrow night,” Chaney said Monday.

Due to temperatures expected to be near freezing, some areas could see the accumulation of rainfall, making icy roads a possible risk.
