Up to 8 inches of snow expected for Michigan in Wednesday Storm

A winter storm is expected to bring up to 8 inches of snow to parts of Lower Michigan on Wednesday, but less is probably most of the Metro Detroit, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm wall was issued on Monday for more than 40 counties throughout the state with predictions of 5-7 inches accumulating to Midland, Bay, Huron, Saginaw, Tuscola and Sanilac counties in the eastern half of the state; Barry, Eaton, Ingham, Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Jackson counties; As well as Mason, Lake, Osceola, Clare, Oceana, Newaygo, Mecosta, Isabella, Muskegon, Montcalm, Gratiot, Ottawa, Kent, Ionia, Clinton, Allegan and Van Buren counties.

Smaller snow in 4-7 inch range was expected for Metro Detroit, including Washtenaw, Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, St. Clair, Genesee, Lape and Shiawassee.

Accumulations of 4-8 inches are expected in Alpena, Alcona, Ogemaw, Iosco, Gladwin and Arenac counties.

The storm is not expected to start affecting eastern Michigan until after 1 p.m. 13 Wednesday, but the exact track was still considered uncertain.

“We have to see where the system actually spurs because it could depend on how much snowfall people get,” said Sara Schultz, a meteorologist for National Weather Service’s White Lake Township Office.

“For the Detroit area it will be around the 5 inch range, but if the system traces a little more north, we could see less snowfall,” she said. “… We see increasing chances of gathering snowfall during the Wednesday afternoon and overnight for Thursday.”

This week, Monday to Friday, temperatures are expected to be in 20s when snow accumulates.

Accuweather predicts temperatures in the low 30s Saturday and mid -20s Sunday. Periods of snow are also expected this weekend.

Since December 1, Metro Detroit has seen 14 inches of snowfall, which is approx. 12 inches below normal, Schultz said.

Saturday saw some stains almost 2 inches, according to NWS Records.
