Zurich strengthens his team with a world champion. Benjamin Mendy, who won the World Cup in 2018 with France, has signed a contract with FCZ until 2026, the Super League club has announced.

Mendy was most recently under contract as a teammate of Yvon Mvogo at the French second division club Lorient. However, the 30-year-old full back did not appear any appearances for Bretons this season. He played his last competitive match last May.

On Tuesday, Mendy ended his contract with Lorient before signing for FC Zurich. “Of course, we are very pleased and also a little proud that we were able to sign such a top-class player. He will be an important support for our young players in particular,” FCZ president Ancillo Caneepa explained in the press release.

Mendy, who trains in Le Havre, has already played for Marseille, Monaco and Manchester City. In England he was with Coach Pep Guardiola’s disposal for four years until he was suspended in the summer of 2021. At this time he was arrested for alleged sexual violations and spent several months in custody. Two years later and after two lawsuits he was acquitted. The wages detained by Manchester City had to be paid retrospectively.

As Mendy has been able to concentrate fully on football again, he has played 15 games for Lorient in Ligue 1, scoring two goals. He was unable to prevent relegation at the end of last season. He performed his last performance for the French national team in November 2019. At the World Cup in 2018, he played only 40 minutes in the final group match against Denmark (0-0).
