Heavy rain and floods expected in western North Carolina this week

It has been a dry start to 2025, but that is changing.

A slow moving frontal system will bring rounds with heavy rain and a threat of flooding to western North Carolina and Upstate.

Rain begins to move into the region overnight, very light at first, with some pockets with freezing rain possible to higher heights after dawn on Tuesday, February 11.

Asheville set to heavy rain, possible flooding next week

Heavier rain arrives later in the day Tuesday, with rain rounds continues through Thursday morning.

Over the next seven days, our western counties could pick up between five and seven inches of rain, most of it fell before Thursday.

The French Broad River Valley could get between three and five inches of rainfall.

The large amount of rain in a short time will lead to some floods in the area at the highest risk of Western locations.

Smaller floods are possible along the French wide, Due, Saluda, OconaLufte and Tuckasegee Rivers.

A factor that reduces the flood effect is the fact that both Asheville and Upstate are more than three inches below average of rainfall for the year. But another round of rain forecast for the weekend could increase the flood threat again.

Make sure you have a way to receive watches and warnings and be prepared to move to higher soil immediately if a flash flood warning is broadcast where you are.
