Seattle -voters approve two key charges to public school

As the first, unofficial results rolled in for Tuesday’s special choices, Seattle thanked Public Schools voters for the passage of two charges.

A statement from Superintendent Brent Jones says:

“I would like to thank Seattle voters for renewing proposals 1, educational programs and operating tax and proposal 2, Building Excellence Capital Levy. Your continued investment ensures that our students and schools have the resources they need, including staff, technology and safe, healthy learning environments.

We deeply appreciate our society’s ongoing commitment to public education in Seattle. Once again, parents, families, neighbors and the wider Seattle community have stepped up to maintain significant funding for our students and schools.

Now our focus is shifting to Washington State Legislature. It is time for state leaders to meet their responsibility to fully finance basic education. Our students trust them to do their part. “

The Seattle School District had two charges on the ballot, required a simple majority from voters.

Suggestion 1: Renewal of Education Programs and Operations (EP&O) Levy supports daily school operations and helps programs such as art and athletics.

Proposal 2: Renewal of the Building Excellence VI (BEX VI) Capital tax – Fundschool Renovations, replacements and earthquake security improvements to maintain safe and healthy school buildings. Also find 90% of the district’s technology budget, continued funds for student computers and class technology.

When the first election results were released on Tuesday night, Proposition 1 went by more than 77% of voters who approved the measure.

More than 71% of voters approved proposals 2.

More results are released Wednesday.
