Neither brave nor all the new

Captain America: Brave New World opens in theaters on Friday 14 February.

Sam Wilson has had a hell of a decade. For the past 10 years we have seen the veteran adviser marked as a refugee, imprisoned on the fleet, broken out of existence, surpassed as the new Captain America (despite Steve Rogers’ wishes) and worst of all, best of Ant-Man in single battle. That he is still willing to put it all on the line after all that is what makes Sam such a convincing, solid hero, and what makes Captain America: Brave New World to feel disappointingly afraid to venture say out into the unknown.

Brave New World has an incredibly difficult task right out of the gate: To get us up to speed on a franchise that now includes more than 40 movies and TV shows. The law of diminishing return suggests that it has never been less Probably that the average audience member will be able to remember, the events of 2008’s The Incredible Hulk say – not to say 2021’s Eternals – in an instant. A title like “Brave New World” suggests it maybe, perhaps Anthony Mackie’s first headlining concert behind The Shield could forge to unexplored territory. But almost instantly, news broadcasts and archive video resurfaced largely unfamiliar MCU events with a “earlier at the …” level of subtlety. You can almost see the Marvel brass crossing your fingers in the hope that this contest is enough to replace the love we may or may not have for movies that are 10-plus years old at this time.

Building a new story out of mostly old parts is nothing new in Hollywood, and certainly not for Marvel Studios, but Brave New World especially feels craving in how it peckes around the events of the Holy Timeline for Structure. With its “political thriller” pitcher, Brave New World Naked 2014’s 2014’s The winter soldier With a mess with exterior motifs, double agents, brainwashing and of course a secret military outpost with a villain’s camp in the basement. Take it home, throw a dead heavenly in the Indian Ocean and a Potato … Baby, you have a stew in time! But just like with Carl Weathers’ recipe, don’t expect anything too tasteful from these leftovers.

With well -known drama that is driving brave new world forward – and fewer comic ambitions than your Guardians or Deadpool and Wolverine -The predictably imagined action is even more of an easy -down. Sam knows his way around in a couple of jet wings, and we’ve seen Vibranium Shield Ricochet out of countless tactical helmets – most of the brave new world’s action feels hesitant to push too far out of the comfort zone, without any real feeling of novelty in either concept or execution. Even Sam’s only technical upgrade of the note is taken directly from Black Panthers Kit. Like many Marvel Studios directors in front of him, Julius Onah does not find much foothold with the Blockbuster material. And that’s before we get to the film’s frustrating itchy “Can’t we all just come together?” Political message asking us to remember to see the good in each other while doing relatively little to call out what the inverse actually looks.
