Kalamazoo advises caution as snowplows work in winter weather

The hours in front of West Michigan’s Snowstorm made the city of Kalamazoo that its snow plows were out on the road early. They were preparing for the incoming four to six inches of snow.

“We have also had herds that do what is called pre -treatment. So we have trucks that have the ability to put a solution on the roadway, there is an agricultural bi-product solution that helps prevent snow from going it first from getting down from keeping to the roads and giving us the opportunity to plow it First pass a little easier, ”said James Baker, City of Kalamazoo’s director of public services and city engineer.

Baker said their goal is to get all major streets cleared with the first 24 hours and local streets of 48 hours.

They will also prioritize hospital routes, Majors Hills, Local Streets and then Quarter Streets.

It followed by 23 miles worth of sidewalks and a contractor who has settled in to cloud another 14 miles of the sidewalks.

The city asks residents to be careful about the snow plates as their driving methods will not see traditional -so watch out for. For example, the snow pliers will be in rotations just to clear that part of the road, not to turn.

“We have signage that says staying 200 meters back. The reason for these is these plows that may be backed up, many times when they clear the cross, they drive through the intersection first, and then they will back up and then turn, ”Baker said.

Currently, there are 12 snow plates sailing through all Kalamazoos city limits everywhere with a blue street sign, according to Baker.

These herds work 12-hour shifts and then switches out with another driver who will also work a 12 hour shift. This rotation only stops when it’s time to get gas when the snow plates need maintenance or when the snow has stopped falling and weighing are clear.
