Auburn – as a powerful Winter Storm Movements into northern California, football communities in location and Nevada counties are ready for heavy rain and strong wind. Local officials say they are prepared for the impact, with herds in standby and flood limitation efforts in place.

Residents of the region are preparing at the last minute before the worst of the storm arrives. However, some take advantage of the dry conditions while they hold.

At Thursday night, Auburn’s outdoor pickleball courts will be empty, sidewalk smooth with rain. But so far, players like Mariah Quintanilla pressed in one last game.

“I just want to get as much games as possible before we have to stay in for a few days,” Quintanilla said.

With more inches of rain and gusty wind expected, Place and Nevada Counties do not take any chances. Sandbag stations have been created in several places, and the county’s herds are on duty around the clock to respond to potential floods, abandoned trees and mud glids.

“We have our Nevada County Roads crews respond 24-7 and after hours,” said Taylor Wolfe, a public information manager for Nevada County. “We can see floods, mud lids and potentially laid down trees with some of the gusty wind.”

To minimize flooding risks, herds have worked in front of the storm and cleared charcoal plants and drains.

“Our road herds throughout the winter season are constantly preparing for the next storm,” Wolfe added.
