Consulting on boiling water lifted in Prince George’s County

WSSC Water has lifted the boiling water counseling for customers in southern Prince George’s County per. 16.25 Wednesday. Test results confirmed that the water is safe to consume.

WSSC water worked closely with the Maryland Department of the Environment to implement a comprehensive water quality removal strategy across the affected area, ensuring the safety of drinking water for all affected customers.

Step to Customers After Consulting

What is the next one:

Now that the counseling is lifted, WSSC Water advises affected customers to take the following precautions:

  • Start rinsing water lines with a faucet with cold water on the lowest floor.
  • Slowly open the faucet to release trapped air, reduce “water hammer” noise.
  • Repeat this process on each floor, moves from the lowest to highest.
  • When the water runs clearly (within five minutes), turn off the taps in the same order.
  • Rinse the refrigerator’s water lines and disposed of stored water, beverages or ice cream made under BWA.
  • Discard the next three servings of ice and clean ice cream producer containers with a solution of two tablespoons of bleach per day. Gallon of water.

An interactive map is available on WSSC Water’s Website Web site to confirm if they need to follow these steps. Customers who experience problems after flushing their systems should contact WSSC Water’s Emergency Services Center at 301-206-4002.

What caused advice on boiling water?

BWA was issued as a precaution after a significant pressure loss in the WSSC water system due to a 54-inch headbreak in a wooded area near I-495 and MD 214 on Tuesday 11 February. Pressure loss in a water distribution system increases the risk of pollution, which gets the advice.

While BWA has been lifted, repairs are repairs on the large water size. Crews had to construct an access road and install a temporary bridge to reach the broken pipe. The lifting of the counseling was based on successful water quality testing and was not dependent on the completion of pipe repairs.

Background: Previous advisory expansion

Earlier in the week, WSSC waters expanded BWA to additional areas north and east of Maryland 4 after discovering the extent of the water’s main break. Customers were asked to boil tap water for at least a minute before drinking, cooking or preparing baby formula.

Although the water pressure was restored, the counseling remained until the water quality tests met safety standards. Customers were informed that they could safely use water for activities that are not consumption, such as sink, laundry and bathing.

Ongoing repairs and future updates

WSSC water herds are still working to repair the damaged 54-inch water method. Due to the remote location of the break, excavation and pipe replacement efforts are made.
