The Duel at Daytona: What to know about Unique Daytona 500 qualification

The duel on Daytona plays a large part of the Daytona 500 as it sets almost everything started for Sunday’s race. Qualification started Wednesday in typical manner: Each driver will place a timed lap in the first round, and the 10 best progress for another round. The winner in the round claims pole position, while Runner-Up also gets a front-line space on the Daytona 500 grille.

However, from there we differ from normal procedure, and this is where the duel at Daytona comes in. Despite the official name, there are actually two races on Thursday: Odd-numbered post-therapists from qualification will run in duel 1, while evenly numbered post-processors enter duel 2.

Each duel is a 60-lil, 150 km run at Daytona International Speedway, and the finishing process sorts each row of the grid behind the two top drivers from qualifying. Racers from Duel 1 will be placed on the interior lane in order of finish, with the winner behind the driver in pole position and so on. Duel 2’s drivers are placed in the outside lane, again in order of finish.
