More about McMahon:

  • McMahon’s background in education is limited. She served for about a year in Connecticut’s State Board of Education.
  • Until recently, there was not much known about McMahon’s political attitudes towards education. In January, She shared More about where she stands, including that she supports the expansion of school choices and career and technical educational opportunities for students.
  • She had leadership positions at WWE for almost three decades, including CEO.
  • If confirmed, McMahon would oversee an agency that the president has already moved to reduce.

What the Education Secretary does: The Education Secretary leads one of the smallest federal agencies, Department of Education. The Agency protects the civil rights for students with disabilities, administers the federal student loan portfolio and sends billions of dollars to schools serving low -income students, among its many responsibilities. What to expect from McMahon’s confirmation hearing:
In recent days, the Trump administration has made celebrating cuts to an independent research arm from the education department and put dozens of employees on paid administrative leave. The White House has also confirmed the president’s plans to shut down departmental programs that are not protected by the law and his plans to urge Congress to close the department completely.

If a recent hearing of the House Education Committee is any indication, McMahon’s confirmation procedure is likely to focus on how she would handle Trump’s plans to dissolve the department what she would do to tackle poor K-12 student performance and how she would work to improve school choice.
