‘Impactful’ Storm hits Upstate NEW: When can one expect snow, ice, bitter cold, high wind (short)

Syracuse, New – A larger winter storm will carry down on Upstate New York this weekend, bringing a potentially dangerous combination of snow, freezing rain and ice through Sunday night.

And that’s just the beginning: the effects of the storm continue in the beginning of next week, with high wind, brutal wind litter and the potential for heavy lake effect snow through Tuesday. Roads could become treacherous and the combination of ice and wind can cause scattered power cuts.

“An affecting storm system will make the way from the southern plains to directly over us after dawn Sunday,” National Weather Service said.

The weather service has issued a number of weather warnings, including a winter storm warning for Nordlandet and Adirondacks and a high wind clock from Finger Lakes to the Vermont border.

The effects of the storm start today, with light to moderate snow that falls over upstate that starts this morning. Tonight, when temperatures heat, gossip and ice could be mixed in. The bitter cold and high wind moves on Sunday night.

Here is a breakdown of what to expect:

Freezing rain/ice. Temperatures will climb today and into Sunday morning and turn snow to freezing rain and possibly just rain in some areas.

It can cause accumulation of ice on roads, sidewalks and trees. A quarter of an inch or more of ice cream is possible from Madison County through the southern level and Catskills. Syracuse could look a little less than that, but still enough to cause dangerously smooth conditions.

There could be scattered power cuts from the weight of ice on trees and wires, says Weather Service.

In central New York, the freezing rain is expected to turn into just rain late Sunday morning.
