Winter will take center stage in Europe, while Italy will be on the sidelines

The last part of November looks interesting from a weather perspective Europewith the first signs of a significant winter phase.

Projections from major models, such as the GFS, suggest an activation of the Polar Vortex, which may have consequences for the European climate.

Among the most relevant configurations, a robust Azores anticyclone is observed above Atlantic Oceanwhich could expand northward up to Greenland.

This scenario could favor a descent of arctic air southward between 18 and 22 Novemberwhich brings about a significant drop in temperature Northern Europe and Central Europe. The cold air mass can lower temperatures significantly in many European regions, bringing them below the seasonal average and favoring snowfall even at low altitudes.

But the effect of this configuration on Italy could differ: while Central-Northern Europe could be hit by this big cold wave, Southern Europe and that Mediterranean Sea basin, including Italy, could experience different conditions.

Italy more on edge with a call for milder air

With the Azores anticyclone shifted north and the arctic air oriented to descend towards the heart of Europe, space would open up over Italy for mild currents from the southwest.

These can, instead of bringing intense cold, lead to an increase in temperatures, especially in Center-South.

The latest updates from the GFS model confirm this scenario, where our country would be predominantly affected by mild air, while the northern regions and especially the Alps, which are closer to the continental cold mass, may experience lower temperatures. If this configuration is confirmed, it is expected that approx 20 Novembercould Italy experience rising temperatures in Center-South thanks to southerly currents.

Meanwhile Northern Italy could experience a colder climate, especially along the Alpine arc.

These forecasts represent a general trend and it will be crucial to monitor weather updates in the coming days to better assess the development of the weather and Italy’s actual involvement in this winter dynamic.
