Arsenal vs Newcastle predictions

Newcastle extended their winning run in all competitions to six games with a 2-1 win at Tottenham on Saturday and the Magpies return to north London for the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie against Arsenal.

Eddie Howe is without centre-back Fabian Schar and central midfielder Bruno Guimaraes through suspension, but his side should still be confident of causing Arsenal problems.

The Gunners struggled to create chances in their 1-1 weekend draw at Brighton and their attacking threat is significantly reduced by the absence of the injured Bukayo Saka.

Ethan Nwaneri filled in on the right wing against Brighton and scored a superb first-half goal, but he is a major doubt for the semi-final first leg and Kai Havertz has missed the last two games through illness.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta would love to have a striker of Alexander Isak’s quality at his disposal and the Newcastle star is worth backing to find the net at the Emirates Stadium.

The Sweden international has been linked with a move to the Gunners and his efforts this season have certainly added a few pounds to his price tag.

He scored the only goal of the game when Arsenal traveled to St James’ Park for November’s league clash and has found the net in each of his last seven top-flight games.

The sizzling run includes a hat-trick against Ipswich and goals against leaders Liverpool, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Tottenham, so he looks a tempting bet to bet against the Gunners.

Arsenal have kept clean sheets in their last four home league games but Crystal Palace strikers Jean-Philippe Mateta and Eddie Nketiah scored in last month’s 3-2 EFL Cup quarter-final win for the Gunners.

Jurrien Timber and Jakub Kiwior started in the center of defense that day, but Isak could make an impact, even if Arteta opts for his first-choice pairing of Gabriel and William Saliba.

They were unconvincing in their last home game, a 1-0 league win over Ipswich, and Isak, who also scored in October’s league and EFL Cup meetings with Chelsea, can continue his prolific form.

Arsenal are odds-on to take a first-leg lead, but Newcastle have lost just one of their last 15 EFL Cup games inside 90 minutes – a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the 2022-23 final.

The Magpies’ impressive form means the Toon Army have every right to dream of landing a long-awaited trophy, even with Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs still in contention.
