ATHENS, GA — Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope and his first-year staff have never met Georgia.

But connections about between the two programs heading into tonight’s game at Stegeman Colosseum.

Pope’s coaching career began at Georgia in 2009 when he joined the staff as the program’s director of basketball operations. The Bulldogs’ coach at the time was Mark Fox, who is now the Wildcats’ associate coach. Pope worked for Fox for one season (2009-10) before leaving to become an assistant coach at Wake Forest.

Fox led the Bulldogs for nine seasons (2009-10 to 2017-18), compiling a 163-133 (.551) record. He also had a head coaching stay at Nevada (2004-05 to 2008-09) and Cal (2019-20 to 2022-23). Fox has a 324-263 (.552) record in 18 seasons as a college coach.

In addition to Fox and Pope, there is another link between this season’s Wildcats and Bulldogs: Somto Cyrila freshman center for Georgia, was originally part of Kentucky’s 2024 signing class. But after former UK coach John Calipari left for Arkansas, Cyril was released from his letter of intent with the Wildcats, eventually signing with the Bulldogs.

Will Pope and Fox leave with a victory over their former employer? Or will Georgia get its third straight home win over seventh-ranked Kentucky in the latest USA TODAY Coaches Poll and is no. 6 in AP Top 25 placements?

Here’s what you need to know to follow today’s match from home:

A 3 at the buzzer by Georgia’s Asa Newell extends Kentucky’s lead; UK trails by 13 points at the break.

This is the Wildcats’ second largest halftime deficit of the season. The biggest? They were down 16 points against Gonzaga. They are looking for a similar result to the one where they came back and won in overtime in Seattle.

Kentucky is shooting 40% (14 for 35) from the field and is just 4 of 13 (30.8%) from the 3-point line. Lamont Butler has 13 points to lead the way for the Wildcats, but no other UK player has more than five.

Georgia made 48.4% (15 for 31) of its field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes. But the Bulldogs made hay at the free throw line, so all 12 of them shot.

Silas Demary Jr. has 11 points for UGA, followed by Blue Cain with 10 and De’Shayne Montgomery with eight.

With 8:02 left in the first half, Kentucky leads Georgia, 23-21.

UK is 10 for 23 (43%) from the field; Georgia is 7 of 19 (37%).

Koby Brea, who knocked down seven 3-pointers as part of a career-high 23-point outing in last week’s game against Florida, will look to play tonight when Kentucky takes on Georgia. Brea had been listed as “questionable” on the SEC’s availability report.

UK coach Mark Pope told the UK Sports Network ahead of tonight’s game that the plan for Brea was to “roll him out there and see how he feels.”
