Will there be school closings due to possible snow? What to know

Some El Paso-area school districts are announcing cancellations and delays as thousands of students were scheduled to return to school Wednesday, Jan. 8, amid falling temperatures and possible snow.

ONE cold front with strong winds will also make temperatures feel as low as zero to 15 degrees by Wednesday, triggering a Cold Winter Advisory and Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service.

During possible inclement weather, districts work closely with the Office of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service and the police to decide whether to delay or cancel classes.

Here’s what school districts are saying about possible delays for Wednesday:

El Paso Independent School District

El Paso ISD will be closed on Wednesday, January 8 due to weather conditions. The closure includes the cancellation of Extended Day Learning classes, both morning and afternoon, and any student ground travel for extracurricular activities.

District officials stressed that the safety of students and staff is the top priority and are closely monitoring updates from the Office of Emergency Management and the National Weather Service.

Socorro Independent School District

SISD will have a two-hour delayed start for all schools in the district on Wednesday, January 8th.

The district’s morning Pre-K classes are canceled for the day, and transportation services will begin two hours from normal pickup times, states the district on its website.

San Elizario Independent School District

San Elizario ISD is closed Wednesday, Jan. 8, due to possible hazardous road conditions and uncertain weather, the district said.

Any closures or delays until Thursday will be announced no later than 17 the day before.

Students must make up the snow day on Monday, May 5, the district noted.

Gadsden Independent School District

Gadsden ISD will have a two-hour delay for students on Wednesday, Jan. 8, for students, although staff members will report at their regularly scheduled time, the district said.

Ysleta Independent School District

YISD is monitoring weather conditions closely and will announce any updates by 1 p.m.

Canutillo Independent School District

Canutillo ISD will delay the start of classes and office hours by two hours on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in anticipation of winter weather, the district announced on social media.

School buses pick up students two hours later than normal, while the remainder of the school day, including school bus drop-off, remains on the normal schedule.

Faben’s Free School District

Fabens ISD will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 8 in response to inclement weather, the district announced on its social media pages.

Anthony Independent School District

Anthony ISD will operate on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, January 8th. The district is monitoring the weather and will provide updates via email and social media, according to a post on its Facebook page.

El Paso Leadership Academy

EPLA cancels classes on Wednesday 8 January due to weather conditions.

Clint Independent School District

Clint ISD will have no classes on Wednesday, Jan. 8, according to a post on his Facebook page.

Harmony Public Schools

Harmony Public Schools is monitoring the winter forecast and will provide updates on the district’s social media pages and campus websites, according to a post on Facebook.
