American Airlines wing clip United Airlines aircraft on taxiway at Chicago O’Hare airport: FAA

CHICAGO (WLS) — An American Airlines flight’s wing clipped the tail of a United Airlines flight Wednesday morning at O’Hare airport, the airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Aviation authorities said the wingtip of American Airlines Flight 1979 to Los Angeles struck the tail of United Airlines Flight 219 to Honolulu while the planes were taxiing on different taxiways around 10 p.m.

Another plane will take the passengers to Hawaii.

Passengers on the American Airlines flight disembarked at a gate and will depart on a replacement flight Wednesday afternoon, a spokesman said.

The American Airlines aircraft involved has been taken out of service for inspection.

“We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience this caused,” the spokesman said.

There was minimal impact on airfield operations, officials said.

The FAA will investigate the cause of the crash.

In 2024, there were 21 “runway attacks” at O’Hare. These are near misses and situations where aircraft (or someone on the tarmac) is in the wrong place at the wrong time, either by accident or due to some confusion from directions. All were in the two lowest incident categories for security risk.

The last time there was a category “A” lane intrusion at O’Hare (the most serious incidents where a collision occurred or was narrowly missed) was in 2015.
