Firefighters battle the blaze at the Rainforest exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Firefighters extinguished a fire Wednesday at the RainForest exhibit at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

Animals and staff were not injured, a zoo spokeswoman said.

The fire is on the outside of the RainForest exhibit, which is located on Wildlife Way, according to Cleveland Fire Department social media page.

The post also stated that a “second alarm was raised to provide additional businesses for shelter.”

Officials have not released the cause of the fire.

The RainForest section of the zoo has been closed for construction since September 9 and was due to reopen in 2026.

The site has been popular since it opened in November 1992. Before construction, it was home to thousands of living plants, trees, flowers and animals, including orangutans, otters, leopards, sloths and more.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer reached out to the city’s fire department for specific details related to the fire, including injuries and the cause of the fire.
