With the funeral for former President Jimmy Carter today at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, today is a national day of mourning in the United States.

The last national day of mourning was in December 2018 to honor former President George HW Bush.

To honor Carter, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient who visited Providence in 1986, all federal offices will be closed on Jan. 9 for the day of mourning. While various other organizations may choose to also close in honor of Carter, unlike on a federal holiday, businesses are not required to close.

So what exactly will be open and closed in Rhode Island on January 9, 2025? Here’s what you need to know.

Federal offices

All federal agencies and departments will be closed on January 9 after a announcement for a one-day shutdown of President Biden.

The Supreme Court

Following Biden’s announcement, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts ordered the Supreme Court building closed on January 9 in recognition of the nation’s day of mourning.

US stock markets

Trading on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed on January 9. The Nasdaq bond markets will be open during reduced hours and close at 14.00, according to a recommendation from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.

Postal Service

According to Tiffany Rowland, strategic communications specialist at the US Postal Service (USPS), there will be no mail delivery on January 9.

Companies and banks

National days of mourning do not require businesses or banks to close, as a federal holiday usually does. Convenience stores, restaurants and shops will remain open unless they individually choose to close.
