Pueblo under winter weather advisory due to snow, chilly temperatures

Pueblo was enveloped in a blanket of snow on January 7, but don’t expect it to last long.

The county was under one winter weather advice from Tuesday morning until late afternoon when a streak of snow hit the region, bringing chilly temperatures with it.

Mike Mosko, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Pueblo office, said chief the band moving through the Pueblo area gradually shifted to the south and southeast just before noon Tuesday, at which point snow was expected to continue falling into the early afternoon before beginning to taper off.

Mosko said the highest snow totals reported to the weather service by noon were between 1.5 inches and just over 2 inches in Pueblo and Pueblo West. Pueblo was expected to see a high temperature of just 28 degrees Fahrenheit and a low temperature of 6 degrees Tuesday night, according to the NWS forecast.

Pueblo weather forecast for Wednesday, January 8

Wednesday’s weather is expected to remain cool, but Pueblo “will definitely see improvement from today,” Mosko said.

“Right now we have things in place, probably tomorrow morning,” he said.

“There may still be some clouds in the morning, but in the afternoon we should be good. Temperatures we have warming tomorrow, but only in the low 30s, so it will still be a cool day. And on Thursday, we have a forecast of mid to the upper 30s for the Pueblo area.”

Pueblo schools cancel classes, PD switches to cold reporting status

The cold and snowy conditions caused class cancellations in both Pueblo school districts Tuesday and prompted the Pueblo Police Department to switch to cold reporting status.

Cold reporting status means that the police do not respond to some minor accidents and involved parties must submit their own accident reports to the police department at a later date.

According to the City of Pueblo, this process applies to accidents where:

  • No one was injured
  • No drugs or alcohol were involved
  • There was less than $1,000 in total damage to all vehicles involved
  • All drivers in the accident remained at the scene
  • All drivers have vehicle and insurance information and all agree to share it

What is a winter road advisory?

The NWS issues winter weather advisories to inform people of weather conditions for which they should exercise caution.

The Jan. 7 winter weather advisory, issued just after 1 p.m. 10.00 and lasts until 17.00, warned of further snow accumulations that could affect travel conditions. The weather advisory noted that travelers should expect slick road conditions that could affect their commute Tuesday night.
