The Golden Gate Bridge’s suicide net appears to be working

SAN FRANCISCOThe Golden Gate Bridge The suicide net appears to be working and doing what it is intended to do – reduce the number of deaths at the bridge.

According to Golden Gate Bridge officials, over the past 20 years there has been an average of 30 suicides per year on the bridge.

Since the one-and-three-quarter-mile safety net was built, the number has dropped to 14, and last year there were eight.

The number of attempts has also decreased.

In a typical year, there are about 200 attempts.

Bridge officials said in 2024 staff successfully intervened in 132 attempts.

The grid, a life-saving project, cost $224 million to complete. Construction began in 2018 and was completed about a year ago.

Last summer we reported that the network was showing signs of working, even while it was under construction, then safety net more than halved the number of suicides.

At the time, bridge officials said the net is a deterrent, but people still end up in the net, in which case first responders come to their aid.
