Notre Dame football and Penn State has already played more games than any previous college football season in the programs’ respective histories.

And none of the programs would have it any other way, then no. 7 Fighting Irish (13-1) and Nittany Lions (13-2) has a shot at the national championship and needs two more wins to secure a shot at a historic title. Notre Dame and Penn State are scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the College Football Playoff Orange Bowl semifinal from Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Notre Dame is seeking its 12th national championship, first since 1988, while Penn State is seeking its first national championship since 1986 and third in program history. This will be the Fighting Irish’s third semifinal appearance. Notre Dame is 0-2 in previous appearances, while Penn State is playing in its first semifinal game.

Penn State is coming off an impressive 31-14 victory over No. 3 Boise State on New Year’s Eve, while Notre Dame posted an equally impressive 23-10 win over No. 2 Georgia on January 2nd. The series between the two programs is tied 9-9-1, with the Nittany Lions winning in the teams’ last matchup in 2007.

The winner of Thursday’s semifinal will play the winner of Friday’s match between No. 5 Texas and no. 8 Ohio State in the national championship game on Jan. 20.

While Notre Dame players are already warming up, Penn State players have just arrived at Hard Rock Stadium for today’s semifinal game. The Nittany Lions arrived almost 30 minutes after the Fighting Irish.
