“These closures are part of the Bold New Chapter strategy announced in February 2024,” the spokesperson confirmed. “This plan is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth, which includes closing approximately 150 underperforming stores over a three-year period while investing in its 350 forward-looking Macy’s locations through fiscal 2026.”

The planned closings also include Macy’s at Exton Square Mall in Exton, Pennsylvania, and Macy’s at Logan Valley Mall in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and Macy’s at Wyoming Valley Mall in Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania.

Center City Macy’s is known for its Christmas light show during the holiday season.

Macy’s shoppers react to closing

Many shoppers at the Macy’s store were not shocked to hear the news that the Center City location was closing.

“I think they haven’t recovered from COVID,” shopper Tiffany told NBC10. “This is happening all over the country. Many businesses are closing.”

Another shopper explained how this store closing is just part of how it goes these days.

“It’s also emblematic of the direction society is heading with all our online purchases,” said Carlo Campbell.
