Notre Dame penalty against Penn State prompts Irish fans to throw trash

Thursday’s College Football Playoff Orange Bowl semifinal between No. 6 Penn State and no. 7 Notre Dame was briefly delayed due to debris thrown onto the pitch at Hard Rock Stadium after a controversial defensive pass interference call against the Irish.

The delay occurred at the 8:48 mark of the fourth quarter when Adon Shuler was called for defensive pass interference against Penn State tight end Tyler Warren. The penalty wiped out a Jack Kiser interception by Penn State quarterback Drew Allar.

Two players after the brief delay on the field, Penn State running back Nick Singleton recorded his third rushing touchdown of the night to set Nittany Lions back up in front of the Irish at 24-17.

Here’s another look at the trash being thrown away:

Singleton’s scoring drive was set up by an interception by Penn State’s Dani Dennis-Sutton, who picked off Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard on first-and-10 after Singleton’s second score of the night.

On its next drive, Notre Dame tied the game at 24-24 on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Leonard to Jaden Greathouse.
