“Americans are so damn petty”

A nationwide ban on TikTok may be imminent, and in retaliation users are turning to another Chinese app called RedNote instead. The Supreme Court is seeking to uphold a law banning the platform, citing security concerns involving its China-based parent company.

Users have opposed this ban, claiming that their right to free speech has been violated. And they really flock to RedNote to make their point instead. The news of the same has since broken on X and has drawn different reactions from many. Here’s how one user responded:

“Americans are so damn petty lmao. Congress goes after TikTok, so everyone goes to download RedNote. The Chinese version, we’re all like data damn it, TAKE IT.”

The chatter in the comment section was visibly sour:

“Rednote is actually pretty satisfying, I’m learning Mandarin just so I can understand the app’s features,” a user shared in jest.

“When TikTok gets banned, I said f*ck it and downloaded the actual Chinese version, RedNote. It’s fun over there. If you use the hashtag TikTok refugee, it’s very easy to find community and doomscroll to your heart’s content!” another called in.

“Honey, I say …………. It gives a bit on RedNote! I’m crying at how many Americans are over there! I have Chinese in the comments welcoming us!” a third person echoed.

“Just created an account on rednote. If the government claims they are banning TikTok because they think China is stealing our data, then I might as well go straight to the source.” joked another user.

Remarkably, the comments didn’t stop there as X was inundated with opinions, memes and reactions:

“You guys xiaohongshu/rednote is the third most popular social network on the app store charts because everyone wants to protest the stupid tiktok ban. lmaooo,” one user pointed out.

“With the TikTok ban looming, Americans are flooding “RedNote” and every Chinese who’s been on the app is probably like WTF IS GOING ON.” another joked.

“I think the funniest possible outcome of the TikTok ban is everyone moving to REDNote/Xiaohongshu. Mission failed ig,” another echo.

“Well the REDnote app actually looks good, we just need a bunch of Americans to make it better,” another weighed in.

Scores online were visibly unhappy with the idea of a ban on TikTok.

Everything we know about the TikTok ban: When to expect it, is it permanent and more

The court’s nine judges reportedly heard the oral arguments just this Friday, and a decision is expected in the coming days. Should the ban be imposed, it need not be permanent, as TikTok’s parent company ByteDance has the option to sell to a non-Chinese company.

If they do not, they will be asked to cease all operations by January 19. BBC reports that the company has confirmed that it will not be selling its platform, which boasts well over 170 million users.

Nevertheless, users object to the idea of a ban, arguing that it violates their First Amendment rights. However, BBC reports that the US government countered those claims by arguing that without the ban, China could use the app to mine data and spy.

Should the ban on TikTok be imposed, will all app stores have to remove the app? For those who already have it on their phones, it will likely be difficult to access unless a VPN or proxy server is used.
