Will There An American Primeval Season 2?

Netflix has yet to renew American Primeval for a second season, but the show’s director and executive producer, Peter Berg, has expressed interest in continuing the story with another chapter.

“You know, after we wrapped and I looked at all the actors — the ones that were still alive — I felt so much affection for them,” he shared Decides. “And I think there are a lot of ways we can go.”

He continued, “I still have to thaw out from my time on those mountains in the winter, but maybe if they came down to earth it wasn’t quite as cold as we could. We could go back.”

Berg added that one condition for his return hinges on the show’s Indigenous consultant, Julie O’Keefe. “If Julie comes back, I would be ready to discuss it,” he revealed. “As long as I don’t have to get ice cubes again, I’ll definitely be back.”

What could American Primeval Season 2 Be About?

As viewers know, season 1 of American Primeval featured a significant number of character deaths, including those from the Mountain Meadows Massacre, acts of self-defense, scalpings, and other brutal events.

As a result, the pool of characters who could return for a second season is quite limited. Potential returning cast members include Betty Gilpin as Sara, Preston Mota as Devin, Shawnee Pourier as Two Moons, Kim Coates as Brigham Young and Shea Whigham as Jim Bridger. Unfortunately, Taylor Kitsch cannot reprise his role as Isaac as his character was killed while heroically protecting Sara, Devin and Two Moons.

The next installment could explore Sara, Devin and Two Moons continuing their journey to California, or it could stay in Utah to delve deeper into the conflicts involving the Mormons. Alternatively, the series could take an anthology approach, shifting the focus to a new family of pioneers and their story during the Utah War.

Since American Primeval was set up as a limited series, Netflix will likely evaluate the show’s performance over the next few weeks — or even months — before deciding on a potential renewal. If a second season is greenlit, new episodes likely won’t debut until late 2026 or early 2027. Stay tuned to learn more.
