Local schools close, dismiss early amid winter weather

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – See which CSRA schools have changed schedules due to winter weather conditions on Friday.

As CSRA harnesses for potential severe ice and snowsome school districts are beginning to move to a virtual learning day.

Others, including the Richmond County School System, will hold classes but release students early.

Richmond County

Out of an abundance of caution, all field trips, after school activities and the district spelling bee will be postponed. School buildings will open early to accommodate students who may arrive before their scheduled start times.

Here is the schedule for early dismissal:

Other districts

  • Aiken County Public School District officials announced that schools and offices will be closed today, Friday, due to the weather.
  • Aiken Technical College will move to remote operation for the remainder of the school day on Friday.
  • University of South Carolina Aiken will transition to remote operations effective Friday at 9:00 a.m. Personal events planned until 12.00 tomorrow, January 11, has been postponed.
  • Allendale County School District will cancel all athletic events and after-school classes on Friday. Note that we still have normal school hours tomorrow.
  • Augusta Technical College locations will be closed Friday. Advising, registration and tuition/fee payment assistance will still be available virtually. The college plans to reopen on Saturday for scheduled new student orientations.
  • Augusta University has canceled all in-person classes and activities for Friday. Online teaching continues as planned.
  • Bamberg County School District departs Friday at 11.30 am. All sporting events scheduled for Friday night have been moved to a later date. Please note that if weather conditions deteriorate faster than expected, these plans are subject to change.
  • Barnwell County School District will not have changes in regular school operations; however, all after-school activities have been canceled or rescheduled.
  • Briarwood Academy in Warrenton will be closed on Friday.
  • The Burke County Public School System will be open and operating on a normal schedule Friday.
  • Columbia County School District says schools will dismiss early on Friday. Primary schools will dismiss at 11:25 a.m.; middle schools are dismissed at 10.30 and high schools are dismissed at 10.35. Grab-and-go lunches will be available to students before they depart from school. Normal operations will resume on Monday.
  • Edgefield County School District says the school will move to an e-learning day on Friday, meaning there will be no bus schedules and no on-campus classes.
  • Emanuel County Schools will be in normal session on Friday. Please note that some buses may be delayed due to weather-related road conditions.
  • Georgia Military College will be closed Friday. This includes the Main Campus, Prep School and all Junior College satellite locations throughout the state. Campus operations and classes are scheduled to resume as normal on Monday.
  • Glascock County School System and Family Connections and Communities in the schools after school will be closed on Friday. They plan to reopen on Monday.
  • Hancock County Schools say they want an asynchronous homework on Friday. Students will receive assignments from their teachers on Thursdays to complete at home and each student will also receive a packed lunch on Thursdays that includes breakfast and lunch items to ensure they have meals while at home.
  • Heritage Academy campus will be closed Friday due to weather.
  • Jefferson County Schools will be closed Friday.
  • Lincoln County Schools say all schools will be closed on Friday due to potentially dangerous winter weather.
  • McCormick County School District says Friday will be an eLearning day for all students, meaning students will access lessons through their Google Classroom. Thursday is still a regular school day and the district is asking all students to bring their Chromebooks and chargers home at the end of the school day on Thursday in preparation for eLearning Day on Friday.
  • McDuffie County School System will adopt a “Learn from Home Day” on Friday. Students will receive instructions for their assignments before leaving school today.
  • Orangeburg County School District students and staff will have an early release day on Friday to ensure everyone can be off the roads ahead of expected winter weather. Dismissal times are as follows: elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth grade): 11:30 a.m. Exception: Dover Elementary dismisses at 12:30 p.m.; middle schools, K-12 schools and middle schools: 12:30 p.m.; high schools: 1 p.m. (expect Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School at 1:30 p.m.)
  • SAIL Charter School in Evans will be closed Friday. Researchers will have a day of online learning.
  • Saluda County School District says because of the potential weather, schools will have an e-learning day on Friday. In addition, all after-school activities have been cancelled.
  • Taliaferro County School District announced school will be a virtual/asynchronous day on Friday.
  • Tall Pines STEM Academy will be closed Friday. It will be an e-learning day.
  • Warren County Schools will close on Friday due to inclement weather.
  • Washington County Public School District will switch to a home learning model by Friday. The students will have homework to do. All leisure activities are also canceled on Friday through the weekend.
  • Wilkes County School officials announced due to the winter weather advisory, schools will have a virtual learning day on Friday. Students must log in to Google Classroom to access their assignments.

Schools are also canceling after-school games and activities as they monitor weather conditions.

  • Aiken County Public School District says all after school activities (games, events, QuestZone) will be canceled from Friday after school through Saturday afternoon.
  • Bamberg-Ehrhardt v Barnwell has been postponed until Thursday.
  • Burke County Public School System says all after school activities scheduled for Friday have been canceled. All Burke Co. High School Basketball games scheduled for Friday have been rescheduled for Saturday, JV Boys: 3:30 p.m.; Varsity Girls: 5 p.m.; Varsity Boys: 6:30 p.m.; All games will be played at BCHS.
  • Calhoun County vs Blackville-Hilda has been postponed until Thursday.
  • Columbia County School System announced all after school activities and events are canceled on Friday.
  • Edgefield County: Kickoff for Boarder Bowl XII has been moved to 14 on Saturday
  • Glascock County vs. Hancock Central has been moved to Thursday.
  • Horse Creek Academy says the varsity girls’ and boys’ basketball games against Wagener-Salley, scheduled for Friday night, have been moved to Thursday night.
  • McCormick County Schools say the JV and varsity basketball games scheduled for Friday will now be played on Thursday, beginning with the JV game. The JV and Varsity games will be played in the McCormick Middle School gym and the Middle School games will be played in the McCormick High School gym starting at 6 p.m.
  • Screven County’s Friday night basketball game start times have changed: Girls start at 16.00 and boys at 17.30 Saturday’s basketball game vs Burke Co. has been moved to Saturday, January 18, at home, the girls start at 15:00 and boys start at 16:30
  • Williston-Elko High School says the JV and varsity basketball games have been moved to Thursday starting at 17.00

OTHER CLOSURES:

  • Aiken County Best Friend Express Transit System buses will not run Friday due to Winter Storm Cora and potential icy road conditions.
  • All non-essential Aiken County offices and collection centers closes today at 10:15. Please plan accordingly. For the latest updates, visit the official Aiken County website or follow our social media channels.
  • Augustan government officials announced that all government offices will close at Normal operations will resume on Monday. Residents are encouraged to limit travel due to potentially dangerous road conditions. If travel is necessary, drive with extreme caution. Please see the attached release for a list of office/service closures and additional information.
  • Augusta Parks and Recreation Officials say due to inclement weather all facilities will be closed today including: Community Centers, Administrative Office, Rental Office, Athletic Offices, Newman Tennis Center, Aquatic Center, Henry Brigham Swim Center.
  • Columbia County offices closes Friday noon. The offices affected include: Board of Commissioners, Tax Commissioner, Columbia County Sheriff’s Administration, Clerk of Court, All Courts and District Attorney’s Office. In addition to the closing of county offices, all Columbia County Libraries, including Evans Library, Grovetown Library and Harlem Library, will also close at noon today.
  • Glasscock County offices will close Friday due to the threat of inclement weather.
  • Lincoln County Government officials say all offices are closed Friday at 9.30 due to the winter weather.
  • Riverview Park Activity Center closes at 5pm on Friday. Kinderhooper Basketball games scheduled for Friday night have been canceled and will be rescheduled. The activity center postpones the opening on Saturday until 8.30. All youth basketball games for Saturday will be played as scheduled.
