Just over 2,000 cases of chicken broth sold at Walmart have been recalled due to a packaging problem that could lead to product spoilage, a Walmart spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY Monday morning.

The product, family-size, 48-ounce cartons of Great Value Chicken Broth, is sold in aseptic paper cartons that can “compromise the sterility of the product, resulting in spoilage,” according to a notice posted on the website of the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration.

A total of 2,023 cases have been recalled, according to the announcement.

The recalled products were sold in 242 stores in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, Walmart said Monday morning.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” Walmart said in a statement to USA TODAY. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took steps to remove all affected (products) from … select, affected stores. We continue to work with the supplier to investigate.”

Who started the recall?

According to revoke notification published online, the company that recalled the product is Tree House Foods Inc. in Oak Brook, British Columbia. The company issued the recall on December 11.

Walmart said all customers who purchased the product should not consume it and throw it away. They can also request a full refund.

The recalled products are labeled with the following information:

  • Best used by: March 25, 2026
  • Batch/lot code: 98F09234
  • Retail Unit UPC: 007874206684
  • Case UPC: 078742066844
