FDA recalls more than 12,000 cartons of premium chicken broth sold at Walmart

If you’ve recently purchased chicken stock at your local Walmart, it’s time to check your pantry.

In December, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for more than 2,000 cases of chicken broth sold in Walmart stores across the United States under the name Great Value Chicken Broth. Seam The FDA explainedthe recall notice was issued after it was discovered that the packaging had a problem that could lead to product spoilage.

The recall includes 2,023 of the 48-ounce family-size cartons produced by Tree House Foods and sold across 242 Walmart locations in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The cartons have Batch (Lot) Code 98F09234, Retail Unit UPC of 007874206684 and Case UPC of 078742066844. They also have a Best if Used before date of March 25, 2026.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson said in a statement to various publications. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took steps to remove all affected (products) from … select, affected stores. We continue to work with the supplier to investigate.”

Anyone who purchased the chicken broth is urged to discard it immediately or return it to their place of purchase for a full refund.

Although there have been no reports of illness related to this recall, it is still important to discard the product. Seam The healthy one reported, with bacterial spoilage, it is “unlikely that you will notice a change in the taste, smell or appearance of your food”, making it difficult to tell if something has gone bad. However, if a product is contaminated with harmful bacteria, it can lead to food poisoning and thus lead to gastrointestinal symptoms.

This is not the only recent recall by Walmart. As Food & Wine previously reported, the FDA also issued a recall notice on Dec. 31 for Braga Fresh’s washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets due to “the possibility of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.” This product was sold at Walmart locations in 20 states, so be sure to check your freezer for that as well.
