Skeleton Crew’s Season 2 Chances Don’t Look Good, But Star Wars Show’s Creators Are “Happy to Do More” If Renewed

Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew‘s creators have revealed they are “dreaming” of doing a second season, but it looks likely the show won’t be returning for another outing.

Speaking to TechRadar, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford said that in the event that their series is renewed, they have come up with “various possibilities” about where the story could go.

Asked if they had discussed what a sequel season’s plot might entail ahead of the Star Wars show’s Season 1 finale, which airs tonight (January 14) in the US and tomorrow (January 15) in the UK and Australia, Watts told me: ” Yes, we wanted to make sure this season had a satisfying beginning, middle, and end, but if people want to see more Skeleton Crewwe’d like to do more.”

“We dream about it (a second season),” Ford added. “We’ve come up with different options, so never say never.”

Despite Skeleton Crews positive critical reception – read my Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew review to see what I thought of it – a second season looks unlikely.

Sore recently published data by Nielsena reputable US audience measurement firm, the Disney Plus series failed to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart for the week running December 9 to 15, 2024 – ie. the seven-day period after the show debuted on one of the world’s top streaming services. Fellow TV Originals incl AP Blo and A man on the insideplus Jamie Foxx’s Netflix comedy special, racked up more minutes streamed than Skeleton Crew did.

According to the Star Wars fansite Jedi Temple Archives, Skeleton Crew also didn’t break into the list of the 10 most-watched TV shows from Luminate, another entertainment industry data company, for that week. Actually Skeleton Crew‘s 384 million minutes watched is the lowest total ever for a Star Wars series premiere. The book about Boba Fett had held that record with 389 million minutes accumulated after its one-episode premiere in December 2021. Even The acolytewhich wasn’t as successful as Disney and Lucasfilm hoped it would be, totaling 488 million minutes streamed in its first seven days on the platform.

However, there are caveats to these viewing figures. Nielsen and Luminate’s data only concern US households, so Skeleton Crew‘s worldwide ‘millions of minutes streamed’ haul will be higher than what has been reported. It is also possible that e.g Andors first season, positive word of mouth may have helped episodes 3 through 7 perform better. However, we won’t know if they did until Nielsen and Luminate publish the viewing figures for these chapters in the coming weeks.

If Disney decides not to greenlight a second season, Skeleton Crew‘s Season 1 finale may not be the end of the characters’ adventures in Lucasfilm’s iconic galaxy far, far away. In fact, with one of Star Wars’ many new movies to bring together characters from the shows, including The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsokafor a team-up film, there are all possibilities for it Skeleton Crew‘s young stars could be part of the cause. That, Watts and Ford said, is something they would be open to exploring.

“It’s exciting to think about,” Watts said. “We’ve mainly been focused on telling this story, but there’s always a chance they (the kids) might meet some surprising people in the future.”

“The exciting thing about these characters is that the kids are actually child actors,” added Ford, “and they’re growing up. So if they were appearing in something else, we’d tell the story of how they grew up and found their place in the galaxy.”

Therefore, don’t be surprised if Wim and company appear in Lucasfilm’s creative director Dave Filonis Avengers-style Star Wars movies. And let’s hope they also show up for a second season of what I think is one of the best Disney Plus shows in a while.
