Tiger Woods makes debut; LAGC runs away

game

Tonight’s TGL match, the second for the new indoor golf league, has as much hype as the first. That’s because Tiger Woods makes his debut with Jupiter Links Golf Club vs. Los Angeles Golf Club.

Woods founded TGL with Rory McIlroy, and the newly built SoFi Center is located in Palm Beach Gardens, a short half-hour drive south of his Jupiter Island home. However, his team was picked to finish last in the league and he, Max Homa and Kevin Kisner will look to change those odds against Collin Morikawa, Justin Rose and Sahith Theegala.

Tiger Woods and the TGL leaderboard

Tiger Woods and Justin Rose started the match play portion of the competition. Jupiter Links dropped the hammer to start the hole, only for LAGC to drop it before Rose’s 5-foot par putt to win the hole. The putt was pushed to the right, keeping the score at 8-1.

But the boat race continued after Kevin Kisner hit his tee shot on the 11th out of bounds, opening the door for Collin Morikawa to win the hole. Sahith Theegala and Max Homa tied the 12th.

Woods put his tee shot on 13 in the water, then his third shot fell into the greenside bunker and his fourth stayed in the bunker. Rose comfortably finished 13th out of four to take a 10-1 lead.

Kisner drew a laugh from the players and the crowd when his second shot on the 14th was a bunker shot that came out way too hot and deflected off the flagstick. His subsequent plea chip horseshoe out of the hole. Morikawa calmly finished the par-3 hole in three shots as LAGC took an 11-1 lead.

On the seventh hole, neither tee shot hit the par-3 green, but Kevin Kisner’s chip from 66 feet landed close enough for LAGC to concede the par putt. Collin Morikawa’s chip left a 9-foot par putt for Sahith Theegala, who birdied the hole.

Then in the eighth, Justin Rose sank a 14-footer to take a 6-1 lead. Both teams found greenside bunkers on the ninth hole, although it was in two for LAGC and in three for Jupiter Links. LAGC dropped the hammer and Jupiter Links accepted, but Tiger Woods’ 8-foot putt for par to tie the hole was pushed right, making it 8-1 after the alternate shot session.

Theegala eagled the final hole while Homa hit his second shot on the 729-yard hole out of bounds. LAGC won the game, 12-1.

On the sixth hole, Tiger Woods’ approach shot landed and settled 10 feet from the hole, while Justin Rose’s shot trickled off the green for LAGC, which was already recovering from Sahith Theegala’s tee shot going off the fairway. LAGC cashed in the gap and cut Jupiter Links’ deficit to 5-1.

The hammer was dropped after LAGC’s tee shot on the fourth and was accepted for a two-point chance. But Tiger Woods’ 7-foot putt to keep the hole square sprayed left, extending Jupiter Links Golf Club’s deficit to 5-0 after four holes.

On the fifth hole, Woods sank a 7-foot par putt as guest TV analyst Serena Williams chastised her friend “finally” as Woods’ mother looked on. But Justin Rose shook off a Jupiter Links GC timeout in an attempt to ice him to the side a similar putt and keep the score 5-0.

Tiger Woods holed a 42-foot birdie putt just left of the hole at the third, and then Los Angeles Golf Club dropped the hammer, making the hole worth two points. Justin Rose then sunk his 8-foot putt to make it 3-0 after three holes in the nine-hole alternate stroke portion of the competition.

The 586-foot second hole presented a major challenge. And both teams’ second shots – by Jupiter Links GC’s Max Homa and LAGC’s Sahith Theegala – landed in the virtual water. However, Tiger Woods also found the drink on Jupiter’s fourth shot, opening the door for LAGC to claim its first point.

Tiger Woods drops the hammer just off the tee on the first hole – meaning this opener is worth two points. Justin Rose sank the 4-foot putt for par and then cashed in the par putt at Jupiter Links, keeping the score even after one hole.

The ESPN broadcast begins with an interview with Scott Van Pelt and — who else? — Tiger Woods, who says he’s there tonight to have fun.

The players from both Los Angeles Golf Club and Jupiter Links GC are then introduced as the crowd, which includes tennis all-time great Serena Williams, roars in appreciation.
