ForbesNEW ‘Connections’ hints and answers for Tuesday 14th January

It’s Wednesday, and you know what that means: it’s time for another round Connections!

I’m writing to you from my laptop while huddled under a blanket because hey, guess what? It gets pretty cold in Canada this time of year. I wasn’t kidding about not going outside unless I can help it until probably April.

Before we get started, I’ve started a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can chat about each game (and other topics) with me and other people. I’m always interested in finding out how other people approach the game, so join in! It’s funny.

It’s also the best way to give me feedback on the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions when I mess up.

Today’s NEW Connections advice and answers for Wednesday 15 January will come straight up.

How Connections plays

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on NEW website or game app.

You are presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by finding out the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names of research study participants, or words with a body part in front.

There is only one solution to each puzzle and you have to be careful when it comes to words that can fit into more than one category. You can mix up the words to perhaps help you see connections between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the hardest. The purple group often involves puns.

Choose four words that you think fit together and press send. If you guess and you’re wrong, you lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you may see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with some tips and if you’re really struggling, today’s is Connections answer. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chat.

If you have one NEW Free access or Play subscription, you can access the publication’s Connections file. This includes all previous games of Connectionsso you can go back and play any of them you missed.

Apart from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find my tips for each grid via Google if you need them! Just click here and add the date of the game for which you need clues or the answers to the search query.

What are today’s connections answers?

Spoiler alert! Don’t scroll down the page any further until you’re ready to find out about today Connections answer.

This is your last warning!

Today’s Connections the answers are…

  • Yellow group — means (MECHANISM, AGENT, TOOL, VEHICLE)
  • Green group — missing (LIGHT, LOW, SHORT, REPEAT)
  • Blue group — martini specifications (DIRTY, DRY, PERFECT, WET)
  • Purple group — fictitious misters (BIG, PEANUT, ROBOT, TOAD)

A mistake to kick things off and I got the rainbow for my third win in a row. Here’s how I managed:

My opening game was a guess at VEHICLE, ROBOT, MECHANISM and TOOL. It put me one away from a group. From there I swapped ROBOT for MEDIUM to get the yellow ones.

Greens was the next time I drew a connection between SHORT and SHY. The blue and purple gave me a bit of trouble. But eventually I figured DIRTY and DRY were types of martini preparations and dug into my memory to remember that PERFECT is one too.

That left the purple ones. I did not connect to this group, although Mr. ROBOT flashed in my mind when I first saw the web. I didn’t really look Sex and the city and I didn’t know about the band Mr. BIG before I looked it up just now. I think Mr. PEANUT has entered Connections before, but I had no recollection of it until I saw the group title appear.

Mr. ROBOT, of course, is a well-regarded drama series, while Mr. TOAD is off The wind in the willows fame. But the actual best loser on the web is Mr. PERFECT, a professional wrestler who was just that good.

That’s all there is to it for today Connections clues and answers. Be sure to check my blog tomorrow for tips and the fix for Thursday’s match if you need them.

PS Games Done Quick is one of my very favorite things. Twice a year, the gaming community celebrates with a week-long charity speedrunning marathon. In other words, players try to finish games as quickly as possible. There are often certain conditions in place, such as not being able to take advantage of any mistakes or even being blindfolded!

The most recent GDQ event took place last week and raised over $2.5 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. This edition had one of my favorite GDQ runs ever. Someone tried to hit Crazy taxi as quickly as possible while a live band played the game’s iconic soundtrack. This is so funny:

And just because, here’s the song most people remember from that game, The Offspring’s “All I Want:”

I want another absolutely brilliant GDQ race for you to enjoy tomorrow.

Have a nice day! Make sure to drink enough water! Call someone you love!
