The clock is ticking on the Mets’ staredown with Pete Alonso

If you sat with all the publicly available evidence, you would come to a different conclusion than this:

The Mets will keep Pete Alonso at a price they’re comfortable with, or they’ll likely soon pivot to spend Steve Cohen’s dollars in another way.

The Mets’ offseason basically has two chapters. In the first, they prioritized what was needed to land Juan Soto and rebuild/deepen their rotation alternatives. That would allow them to believe they had assembled a roster good enough to contend in 2025 and could now be opportunistic/patient with the rest of the market to further upgrade that roster.

This is Chapter 2. The one that includes Alonso. But at some point, the Mets need to hear that Alonso is willing to accept their financial view of him, or they’ll get more aggressive elsewhere, likely pretty soon, to avoid losing out on lingering opportunities.
