Man killed in alleged road rage shooting on I-10 in Maryvale; highway closed

PHOENIX (AZ family) – An apparent roadside shooting has left one man dead and closed a portion of Interstate 10 in Maryvale Wednesday morning.

Phoenix police say the shooting happened in the westbound lanes of I-10 near the Loop 202 interchange. According to Phoenix Police Sgt. Brian Bower, two men got into an argument on the highway when one man shot the other, killing him on the spot.

After the shooting, the injured driver drove into the center median.

Police say the other driver then left the highway and pulled into a nearby parking lot. Bower confirmed he is cooperating with officers and has been interviewed by detectives.

No passengers were in either vehicle and no one else was injured.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the westbound lanes are closed at 75th Avenue, but traffic cameras showed the freeway closure extending to 51st Avenue.

There is no estimated time to reopen the westbound lanes. The eastbound HOV lane is also closed.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and find alternative routes.

Authorities are still working to determine what led to the shooting. Phoenix Police are handling the investigation, while Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers are assisting.
