Jack Hoffman dies after battle with brain cancer

ATKINSON, Neb. (KOLN) – Jack Hoffman, who captured the hearts of Husker fans and the nation, has passed away after a long battle with brain cancer at the age of 19.

Immanuel Lutheran Church in Atkinson shared the news Wednesday.

The Team Jack Foundation, co-founded by his family, said Hoffman died early Wednesday morning. Hoffman was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011 at just five years old.

In December, his mother said tests revealed what they feared most – more new tumors.

As a freshman at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Hoffman recently completed his first semester as a political science major. The university noted that he made the dean’s list and was a valued member of the Loper community.

Hoffman gained widespread recognition during the 2013 Nebraska Spring Game when, at age 7, he ran a 69-yard touchdown in front of more than 60,000 fans. The viral moment brought attention to pediatric brain cancer and the work in it Team Jack Foundationwhich collects funds for research and treatment.

His father, Andy Hoffmandied in 2021 after being diagnosed with glioblastoma.

Funeral for Jack Hoffman held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Atkinson Community Center. A visitation is planned for Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. in Immanuel Lutheran Church.
