Woodlawn High School was placed on lockdown Thursday after receiving a tip that led to the arrest of a student who was found with a weapon.

The student was taken into custody by the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor Gast, a spokeswoman for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system, said the shutdown lasted about three hours, beginning at 6 p.m. 10:50 and ended around 13:50. thorough search of the school “out of an abundance of caution.”

Woodlawn High, along with every other middle and high school in the system, now uses walk-through metal detectors that all students must walk through.

“We have confirmed that the student went through the metal detector and the book bag was searched,” Gast said. “We’re still looking at how it went undetected.”

The Baton Rouge public high school sent a statement to parents shortly after the lockdown began: “We have a zero-tolerance policy for weapons or actions that threaten the safety and security of our school, students and staff.”
