“No more rom-coms, only mom-coms”

Cameron Diaz’s The latest project couldn’t be more aptly named – she really is back. This year, Diaz is playing along Back in actiona spy comedy in which she and Jamie Foxx play two retired spies forced back into the game. Like her character, Diaz has found herself returning to work after taking one ten year break from acting. But while Diaz may be “back,” she has no plans to return to the same old projects.

In fact, Diaz isn’t quite sure she’s even ready to announce her comeback. “If I say it, it becomes this thing,” she said. “I reserve the right to say no to making a film again and I reserve the right to say yes if I decide to. I don’t define anything. I’m just open to what makes sense to me and my family at any given time.” In other words, Back in action could mark the beginning of a new acting era for Diaz, or it could be the last film she ever makes. (Quick, someone write a mom-com for Diaz!)

Diaz became famous in the 90s with roles in The Mask, My Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something About Mary, and Charlie’s Angels. By the early 2000s, she had earned the title of rom-com leading lady with roles in The holiday, What’s happening in Vegas, and The other woman.

But in 2014 she participated in her last project, Annie. “It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life,” she shared Assets of her decision, adding: “No offer… could change my mind about my decision to take care of myself and build the life I really wanted.”

Since then, she has focused on raising her children, Raddix, 5, and 10-month-old Cardinal. “That’s what I put most of my focus on,” Diaz said in one interview for Netflix. “If I was doing something other than just being a mom and living my day to day.”

As Diaz explained during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Back in action was the first film that made her even consider returning.

“I had 10 years of not paying attention to anything, not accepting any progress, and then I got this script and thought maybe it was time,” Diaz said. “If I had to leave my family for 10 hours a day, I would do it with the most talented man in the entertainment business.”

She added: “I thought, ‘If I let this go, if I don’t re-engage and if I don’t give it a chance, I’m a fool.’ It might be the beginning of something, but it’s here now, and I’m grateful for that.”
