Bomb threat prompts early dismissal at Wheat Ridge High School

A bomb threat led to the early dismissal of students at Wheat Ridge High School and the questioning of a teenage girl Friday morning, according to police.

Wheat Ridge Police Department spokesman Alex Rose said the FBI told officers about a social media threat directed at the school around 9:15 a.m.

The police took a girl into custody, and the students were evacuated shortly before 8 p.m. 11:15 a.m. “out of an abundance of caution,” Rose said.

Specialists from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol used bomb-sniffing dogs to search the school, but found no explosives.

“We’re in a unique community where a lot of the students that go to Wheat Ridge High are within walking distance, so a lot of them were just able to walk home,” Rose said.

Parents were notified of the incident and asked to pick up their children before the department wrote about the incident on social media at 11:28

Rose said police have not recommended formal charges for the girl, but are considering the charge of false report of explosives, which he said is a Class 6 felony.
