CapCut suspends US service alongside TikTok amid ban | TikTok | Just Jared: Celebrity News and Gossip

Another popular social media app is going dark in the US next door TikTok.

In case you haven’t been following, a new law passed last year ordered TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance to sell its ownership starting January 19, 2025. If it didn’t, the social media platform would have to be removed from the App Store.

ByteDance has declined to sell the app, meaning the ban will take effect.

Unfortunately, TikTok is not the only platform that ByteDance owns. The company is also the parent of video editing service CapCut, which suspended its service shortly before midnight on January 19.

“Sorry, CapCut is not available right now,” the app says landing page reader. “A new law banning CapCut has been passed in the U.S. Unfortunately, this means you cannot use CapCut right now. Rest assured, we are working to restore our service in the US. Stay updated! In the meantime, you can still manage your account data.”

As recently as this week, USA today noted that it was unclear whether CapCut would also be affected by the law targeting TikTok.

However, it seems that the answer is clear – CapCut, along with TikTok, will be unavailable to US users for the foreseeable future.

Just days before the ban was due to take effect, the Supreme Court rejected a request to hear a case to repeal the law. However, Donald Trump has signaled that he is interested in reassessing the situation when he is sworn in on Monday (January 20).
