NWS issues winter storm warnings, extreme cold watch for several counties

(WBRE/WYOU) — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued numerous winter storm warnings, advisories and even extreme cold weather for Sunday morning.

The NWS has issued the Winter Storm Warning for the following counties starting Sunday morning at 10:00 and ends on Monday at 01:00:

  • Northern and Southern Wayne

Winter storm warnings were also issued for Schuylkill and Columbia Counties to last from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to the warnings, the NWS also says a winter weather advisory is in effect from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday for the following counties:

Total snow accumulations are between six and eight inches in the areas listed where heavy snow is expected at times.

Travel may be difficult as PennDOT has already planned restrictions starting Sunday morning.

Also Saturday, authorities say an extreme cold watch is in effect for the following counties from late Sunday night through Wednesday morning:

The NWS warns that the Extreme Cold Watch is in effect due to expected chills that could reach as low as -20° to -25°.

These severe temperatures can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as half an hour, officials explained.

If you must travel, officials say you should always carry an extra flashlight, food and water in case of emergency.
