Popular Red Sox target nears free agency decision

The Boston Red Sox could soon see one of their offseason goals come off the board.

Tanner Scott weighs in “several multi-year deals” and can choose his team before this weekend, according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. The Chicago Cubs are among his top suitors, according to the report.

Scott, 30, is among baseball’s top relievers, and he combined for a 2.03 ERA over the past two seasons with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. Scott earned his first All-Star nod in 2024 and is expected to parlay his successes into a three- or four-year contract with an average annual salary approaching $20 million.

Chicago is interested, per Sahadev Sharma of The Athleticthough that pay may be too rich for their blood. Boston could easily be in the same boat.

“We have been actively engaged in conversations, we will continue to do so and feel there is an opportunity to add to the bullpen,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said last weekend.
