  • TikTok went dark for US users on Saturday evening.
  • Several other ByteDance-owned platforms are also unavailable, including Lemon8, CapCut, and Marvel Snap.
  • Already downloaded banned apps remain on devices, but they are probably already useless.
  • Banned apps cannot be downloaded from the Apple app or Google Play stores. Many are also not available via the website.

After months of anticipation, short-form video app TikTok went dark on Saturday night, just hours before legislation banning the app on Sundays took effect. But that’s not the only app that’s now unavailable.

Lemon8, CapCut − Video Editor and Marvel Snap are three more platforms affected by the ban, as each has ties to ByteDance, the Chinese parent company that some US officials believe is a national security threat.

Under the ban, it is illegal for internet hosting services and app stores to distribute ByteDance’s platforms, like TikTok. The Apple App Store and Google Play Store do not remove these apps from devices on which they are already downloaded, but the apps have become unavailable to users.

“A law banning TikTok has been passed in the U.S. Unfortunately, this means you can’t use TikTok right now,” a pop-up message can be read on the TikTok mobile app and website. “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok when he takes office. Please stay tuned!”

President-elect Trump has promised to “save” TikTok and said so NBC News last week that he expects “most likely” to offer a 90-day extension to avoid the ban. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
