Snow, rain and a wintry mix have begun blanketing New Jersey on Sunday, with the heaviest snowfall expected this afternoon before the winter storm ends later tonight.

The updated forecast calls for the snow to end between 7 and 11 p.m., first in southwestern New Jersey and then further northeast, according to the latest storm tracker.

“Precipitation is spreading to the region early this afternoon,” he said National Weather Service said in an update at 12:30 p.m.: “Snow may struggle to accumulate at first, but temperatures will drop as the event progresses. Any rain or wintry mix changing to mostly snow by late afternoon or early evening.”

The snow should get heavier during the afternoon, the weather service says.

“The heaviest precipitation appears to occur between approximately 4 and 9 p.m., when snowfall rates could reach or exceed 1 inch per hour,” the weather service said.

Winter storm warnings were expanded early Sunday to include all or parts of 10 counties, where 6 to 8 inches of snow is expected.

The warnings for Hunterdon, Mercer, Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties expire at 1 a.m. Monday.

The warnings for Bergen, Passaic, eastern Essex and eastern Union counties expire at 4 a.m. Monday.

Govt. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for all 21 counties starting at 8 Sunday. It remains in force until he issues an order revoking it.

“When all is said and done, expect snowfall totals of generally 4 to 6 inches near the I-95 corridor with 6 to as much as 9 inches north of (there),” the weather service said.

Winter weather advisories have also been issued for Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Salem counties until 1 Monday.

Advice on winter weather Hudson, eastern Essex and eastern Union counties expire at 4 a.m. Monday.

“As the snow tapers off later this evening, the shift in focus will turn to the windy and very cold conditions pushing into the area,” the weather service said. “Monday morning expect lows mostly in the teens.”

Wind gusts of up to 35 mph could cause blowing snow and affect driving conditions after the storm ends.

Freezing overnight temperatures can also cause icy roads.
