The US stock markets will be closed on Monday, January 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law on November 2, 1983, designating the third Monday in January as a federal holiday in observance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange will both be closed on the federal holiday, but will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, January 21.

U.S. bond markets will also be closed on Jan. 20, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association. The bond markets will also reopen on January 21.

After MLK Day, it will be business as usual on Wall Street until Monday, February 17, when the stock and bond markets close in honor of Presidents Day.

The US stock markets will be closed on the following days in 2025:

  • President’s Day: Monday 17 February
  • Good Friday: Friday, April 18
  • Memorial Day: Monday, May 26
  • Juneteenth: Thursday 19 June
  • Independence Day: Friday, July 4 (markets also close at 1 p.m. ET on July 3)
  • Labor Day: Monday 1 September
  • Thanksgiving: Thursday, November 27 (markets also close at 1:00 PM ET on November 28)
  • Christmas: Thursday, December 25 (markets also close at 1:00 PM ET on December 24)
